The Differences Between Engineering and Data Software

Data and engineering software are two fields that work closely together. While the careers in these fields have some commonalities but they also have distinct areas of expertise which make them distinct.

To manage huge amounts of information and data at a scale, companies require experts to handle the tasks of collecting and preparing it for further analysis. These experts are referred to as data engineers. They use programming languages to develop systems that take data from sources and transform it into formats useful for other data specialists, like data scientists and business intelligence (BI) developers.

As they develop their pipelines data engineers look at how data is structured stored, stored, secured and encoded. They might also suggest or implement ways to improve data reliability, efficiency, and quality. They can, for example assist users to seamlessly merge data by adding uniform IDs.

When their ETL is complete, data engineers often build applications to aid others utilize the company’s data. This includes developing visualizations that highlight key data points such as employee and customer trends, product performance and more. They also manage and create data platforms that employees can access via APIs or web interfaces such as a dashboard.

To accomplish this, they must be able to use different storage and databases. They might, for example, use SQL to query relational database and tools like Python to create more flexible and powerful ETL processes. Alternatively, they could deploy an NoSQL database, such as MongoDB with more flexibility in the way it applies documents to managing data.
